Rooted Community Workshop | Spaces of Fontana
About the event
Ground your body. Create your story. Connect with the living network. Have you ever wondered what the forest can teach us about being human?
You are invited to the inaugural ROOTED Community Workshop—an afternoon designed to slow down, connect with your community, and explore our relationship with the local canopy. Tickets from $0 - $35!
This is a workshop for everyone. You do not need to be a dancer, an artist, or a writer to join us. Whether you haven’t touched a crayon since childhood or consider yourself a lifelong mover, all you need is an open mind and a love of trees.
What to Expect:
We will gather in a relaxed, welcoming circle at Wood Haven ATX Somatic Arts & Training Center to explore the beauty and science of trees through simple, accessible creative steps:
A Guided Nature Meditation & Flow: Gently ground yourself with an easy, low-pressure movement meditation led by Artistic Director Evelyn Joy Hoelscher.
The Connected Forest: Experience gentle, supportive, elemental embodiment to ground us to the earth, sky, and each other. Guided by Board Certified Dance Therapist, Barbara Jo.
Tactile Collage Art: Build a visual map of a memory using simple paper and fabric collage techniques with Brenda Petro (an easy-entry art project—no drawing skills required!).
Collaborative Poetry: Weave your thoughts together with neighbors using a simple, inspiring group format based on the poetry of Mary Oliver.
Local Tree Science: Take home resources and learn how to plant and nurture Austin’s native trees thanks to our partners at TreeFolks. Check out their website!
Be a Part of Creating Something Big
This isn't just a one-day workshop; it is a community-building event for ROOTED, a major immersive performance coming to Austin in Spring 2027. With your permission, the movement, the words, poetry, and collage art created during our afternoon together will directly inspire the choreography, live music score, and art installations for the final grand performance. Come leave your unique mark on a massive local art project!
